The University Press of Kentucky has been publishing ebooks for many years, but its recent expansion of its ebook program has produced results that have captured the attention of the publishing community. During the week of the Annual Association of American University Presses (AAUP) meeting in Baltimore in early June, Inside Higher Education published a story on the impact of ebooks on the university press community that targeted UPK as a leader in the digital age. In the article, John P. Hussey, the Director of Marketing & Sales for the Press, outlined the explosion in the ebook market after the holiday season. In December, “ebooks accounted for a negligible sliver of the press’s sales: 1.6 percent,” according to Hussey. “But in February, ebook sales skyrocketed to 11.3 percent.”
Hussey was asked during the AAUP annual meeting to serve as an expert speaker on the “Ebooks Basics” panel to describe the success of the Kentucky digital program. During his talk, Hussey mentioned the importance of being aggressive in entering the ebook world and illustrated Kentucky’s focus on providing timely content to all library and retail channels.
