Born July 16, 1906, the Dean of Appalachian Literature, James Still, remains one of the most beloved and important writers in America, and especially the Appalachian Region. Best known for his acclaimed novel River of Earth (1940), the Alabama native and adopted Kentuckian left an enduring legacy of novels, stories, and poems during his nearly seventy year career.
